IT IS SUPER-IMPORTANT TO BACKUP YOUR PROFILE!!!
A "user profile" is created and stored on your device the first time you load the web app. This involves automatically generating a unique user ID and Game Zone ID for you (that cannot be changed).
However you can set display names and avatars, and these can be changed at any time.
The traditional approach of having to sign up and create an account with a username/email and password is not required. Instead, the public-private keypair method is used, which you may be familiar with if you use "passkeys" (the ID's mentioned above are actually the public key of the keypair).
Due to the above approach, it is absolutely critical that you backup your profile as soon as possible. If your profile data is removed (through accidental deletion of browser cache/history/data for example) and there is no backup, there is no other way to retrieve your ID's (public-private keypairs).
To backup, click the blue "backup profile" button at the bottom of the profile window (see screenshot above). This will download a text file named gamecards-profile.backup
- make sure you keep it in a folder where it will not be deleted and you remember where it is located (ideally make multiple copies and store on an external drive etc).
If you ever need to restore your profile, simply click on the grey "restore profile" link below the blue button and select the file from the folder/location/drive where you have it saved. However, make sure it is the correct profile and that you are not going to replace a profile that you actually need!
Another protection against profile loss is through linking your profile to other devices, which we will now go through...
Because profile data is not centrally stored on a server, to use your profile/account on multiple devices requires a "linking" process from the device you first accessed the Game Cards web app on, to the other device(s) you want to start accessing the app with.
To do this you select "link profile" from the drop-down menu at the very top-right of the app. You will then be asked to set a password (of at least 6 characters) before generating a link/QR code that you can enter/scan on your other device. Once you enter the correct password your profile will be added to that device.
Note: linking your profile across devices does NOT transfer your Game Zone data (cards, decks, players and awarded cards). This requires connection to a Game Cards Sync Server.
